Addendum: A better way to define it would also have been to say that the spell effects themselves aren’t directly what leads to such harsh punishment. Instead, they carry symbolic meaning, and are the signature spells of the Death Eaters, that were appropriated by them.
So basically, there are alternative spells you could use to achieve similar effects – but by using one of these 3 particular ones, you are outing yourself as a Wizard Nazi. So basically the spell form of a swastika, wolfsangel, sonnenrad, etc.
I kinda get the feeling he’s the kind of person who would want to quit, but feels committed to keep doing it for whatever reason, despite what would be the more rational choice.
But I never got the impression that he’s a chud, hates anyone in particular, or is the kind of greedy ghoul that wants to hoard all the money in the world like a dragon. I think that’s also reflected with how people label him as robot or alien, based on his looks and mannerisms. Those labels have never sat quite right with me, having been called similar things just from acting or looking weird.
He would probably be a lot happier if he could go back to simply being a computer science from Harvard, without anything being attached to his name.
