Just to remind comrades agitating and mobilizing over the next few days, this ruling is class warfare.

The rich were always able to get safe abortions before Roe, and they will continue to be able to get them by traveling to safe states or different countries. This ruling specifically targets the most vulnerable.

My great aunt owned a travel agency in the South in the 1960’s that booked abortions for the rich. I fully expect capitalism to exploit women to the fullest extent possible now that Roe is overturned. There will be businesses started today because of this decision.

We do have effective chemical abortifacients that can be made by anyone with an undergrad in chemistry nowadays; however, that still puts women who use them in the crosshairs of prosecutors in red states who will soon be prosecuting them with old school infanticide laws.

US soldiers are increasingly coming from middle class backgrounds because of the need for so many specialists.

Even that form of social mobility has been curtailed in the past 10-20 years. Things are turning to shit faster and faster now.

Poor people get stuck in jobs that suck when they have kids. I can skip a few meals as an adult with control of myself, maybe my (hypothetical)spouse can to, but a kid needs to be fed constantly so they grow up healthy. Similar with shelter. If rent is too high, maybe I crash at friends’ places, get a bunch of roommates, or do what I can with public places and shelters. You get a kid and that all becomes much harder. So you gotta suck it up and do what the boss says. You also need a job for insurance now, and kids get sick more and worse than adults do. Unionizing now carries an extra risk because you cantjust up and move if you get blacklisted in the town. Kids make doing basically anything harder because you are responsible for a human life that can do nothing on it’s own for many years, and needs a ton of support, material and emotional, even when it’s mostly grown. I don’t know if I want kids, but I am putting myself in a strong position financially and career-wisr before I even consider it. This is a last ditch effort to force everyone back to work in the wake of quitting and unionization.

I know this ruling has been expected, but this feels like big moment. This is an extremely unpopular governmental body making a unilateral decision to rescind the rights of millions of Americans based on theology. This should wake a lot of people up.

I don’t want to bring you down but I could argue that we’re pretty much mislead on how broadly popular RVW is for reasons I could go into.

Are people in California going to take to the streets and block California traffic for the sake of South Carolinians?

Democrats are going to try to settle into the new equilibrium as quick as possible because the fight tends to attract disproportionately more rightoid wingnuts.

I’ll stop here because it’s too :doomjak:

I went out and protested the day that the leak happened then the weekend after. Honestly it made me feel more doomer tbh. Just felt… useless, not a ton of showing. Nothing will be done until capital is legitimately threatened and people aren’t willing to lose their lives over this yet. I guess we’ll see how this progresses tonight .

That all being said, I think its worth it to go out and at least show for a bit. If the crowd is huge, stay, if it feels like a circlejerk and useless, make your decision then

Oh nothing is going to get done legislatively in this country until there is a general strike. I think I’m mostly speaking in terms of heightening the contradictions for the broader, less politically engaged populous.

Holy shit, I just realized that tweet wasn’t even about this ruling, this just made him double down again today. Even when I was a lib I’ve always disliked Olbermann but if even HE has been pushed to this point that says something. I’m not optimistic enough to think it will lead to anywhere without mass illegal organizing and action people aren’t quite ready for yet…but if “Abolish the Court” becomes a mainstream talking point that’s not insignificant.

So, I’m not Amerikan, but it isn’t a stretch to say that without the Dems this wouldn’t have been possible right? Obama gave up one supreme court nomination, and RBG wanted to resign under Clinton or whatever and then fucking died when Trump was in office instead, right?

permalink

Yes. Also they’ve had literal decades to codify abortion rights into federal law, including the last two years with Biden + dem house + dem senate, and including the years under Obama when the dems had a fillibuster-proof supermajority in the senate as well as control of the house

Nothing less than a reproductive rights amendment would secure abortion rights as the US Senate will only become increasingly undemocratic in the future.

Since the undemocratic Senate votes on SCOTUS and federal judges any form of legislative rights for abortion can be taken away now. There is no codifying abortion nationally after Roe is overturned. SCOTUS can just make a new ruling making any codified abortion rights unconstitutional. Only a constitutional amendment will stop this SCOTUS.

The constitution allows Congress to strip any federal court of jurisdiction over a law. They just haven’t used this because they love institutions. They need to use this.

Not that it adds anything concrete here but I think it’s worth pointing out that she died in the middle of the pandemic when people in the US were actually still masking and social distancing. Specifically, she died a few weeks after she officiated a maskless wedding for some connected lanyard dweebs. Do we know for sure that she died of covid because she was a stupid selfish idiot who went to wedding brunch? Not for sure. But I believe it.

Yup! It’s forgotten today but that’s exactly what happened. Everyone was mask, mask, mask - well except for elites obviously. Then she up and died for no particular reason after going maskless and attending a superspreader event. It’ll be an unsolvable mystery, forever, I guess.

To be fair, because the senate was held by republicans at that point, Obama isn’t directly at fault for not getting that nomination. He’s only at fault in that he sucked enough to lose the senate.

Still, there was no precedent for disallowing a sitting president from appointing a Supreme Court Justice. Refusing to hold the hearing was a clear loophole/exploitation which the Dems should have combated on every front possible if they were actually concerned with exercising their electoral mandate(s)

Their argument was largely “he already appointed 2!” and then Trump gets to chuck 3 in there within a single 4 year term with McConnell still in the senate. And I’m not complaining about the hypocrisy, I’m complaining about how fucking useless the dems are.

That particular event was when I realized that bourgeoisie democracy was an absolute farce.

They were also fucking useless not ensuring the right to abortion via legislation in Obamas first term. Obama didn’t want to “divide” people. Dems sat on their hands thinking the Republicans wouldn’t do what they kept saying they wanted to do.

No he could have just placed someone in since they literally refused to even hold a hearing on a nominee. Could have argued that since they wouldn’t hold a hearing they implicitly accept his nomination or something. It was unprecedented at the time though
