Is it common for rich parents to not lift a finger for their kids and instead charge them rent to live in their house? I saw that a lot in wealthy suburbs. There were even a few families that had their kids apply for foodstamps and then used them to buy groceries.
I can confirm this. One of my parents was extremely wealthy, bought himself multiple new cars, a second home to rent out, and always bought himself the best.
Meanwhile, I grew up with holes in my second-hand clothes, going to the cheapest schools (allthe while being told I was a financial burden) and being told to drop out of high school get a job and pay him rent when I was a teen.
Means testing meant I wasn’t able to even apply for a student loan until I was well into my 20s because of the assumption that because I had rich parents they would obviously would pay for it, right?
Between the faux rock exterior siding and that living room that house is easily worth a million.
