On this day in 1970, a spontaneous uprising against U.S. military occupation broke out in Koza, Okinawa, Japan after an American drunk driver struck a local pedestrian. Approximately 60 Americans and 27 Okinawans were injured, and dozens of cars with American license plates were torched.

Following Japan’s defeat in World War II, the country was occupied by Allied forces and governed under martial law. While most of Japan regained its independence in April 1952, the Okinawa Prefecture was to remain under U.S. military occupation for another twenty years.

Prior to the events of December 20th, three Americans had been acquitted via court martial after striking and killing an Okinawa civilian. This incident fueled the growing discontent of Okinawans with the standard status of forces that exempted U.S. servicemen from Okinawan justice.

On December 20th, 1970, a drunk U.S. serviceman struck an Okinawan pedestrian in the city of Koza. A crowd quickly surrounded the car and the policemen who had arrived, demanding that this incident not also be swept under the rug.

When American MPs arrived and attempted to pull the driver away, the protest turned violent, with thousands gathering to try to prevent the driver from leaving. By the end of the night, dozens of cars with American license plates had been torched and approximately 60 Americans and 27 Okinawans had been injured.

Does anyone have predictions on how the upcoming Spielberg army air corps series is going to lib out about ww2?

Traditionally, any anglophonic WW2 movies never mention - let alone depict - the red army. I kinda just expect that trend to hold solid.

It’s about the American pilots, so it honestly wouldn’t be inaccurate to show a lack of overlap. They didn’t exactly share air space much. Unless I’m wrong and missing something.

Ah, then I shall add to my prediction: There will not be a scene where the pilot is about to bomb a Natzi factory, but is told that actually that factory is partially owned by american investors, please bomb the civilian target just to the side of it instead.

They also represent Nazis in an incredibly respectful way - they are always clean, clever and efficient. Contrast this with the way the Nazis and OUN-B were depicted in Come and See (1985) as swaggering, murderous savages drunk on power. What’s interesting is if Hollywood was depicting a group of African, Latam or Asian mass-murderers this is how they’d depict them too, but they can’t bring themselves to do that for Nazis

Ok I was a bit down on the new rick and morty season because the latter half was pretty bad, but the last episode was good, gotta say. Not the best season by far but overall pretty solid, some good laughs in a few episodes. 6/10, bonus points because the guys who replaced roiland killed it.

I’m probably not gonna watch it, so can you tell me what the finale was like? Did it do the exact same thing of Rick apologising to Morty, Morty forgiving him and then their dynamic doesn’t change at all? I feel like that’s happened like three times already and it annoyed me when they treated it as an important part of character development

Surprisingly no. I mean, the dynamic wont change because Harmon has a hard on for full circle hero’s journey storytelling, but this time you dont get any overt rick manipulating morty and lying about changing or any of that bullshit. There is a moment where you get to see that Rick really does love Morty but its a small action not something he says out loud. And Morty’s whole arc is personally coming to terms with his fears about Rick. Discussing it more would spoil what happens because its an episode full of ironic twists until the final reveal, id recommend it.

Id definitely recommend also watching episodes 1-5, and maybe 6. 6 has a few good bits but its this season’s interdimensional cable and its kinda a mess. 7, 8, and 9 are trash, skip em.

If you want full spoilers then:

SPOILERS FOR SEASON 7 EPISODE 10 RICHARD AND MORTIMER

The episode is about Morty jumping into a “fear hole”, which exposes you to your greatest fear until you overcome it, with Rick following him in to save him. At first what the hole considers their fear isnt clear and it shows them several different visions, all starting with them believing they’ve left the hole, lots of ironic twists. But ultimately Morty realizes that Rick never entered the hole when he did and that he most fears his constant reliance on Rick. The end is about Morty coming to terms with that and no longer being so burdened by his reliance on Rick. After you go through the fear hole you get to put your picture up on a board next to it, but Morty forgets and walks away before doing so(or doesnt care enough and just wants to leave). At the end of the episode Rick runs back and almost jumps in (because Morty reveals he saw Diane alive inside) but instead he pulls out a picture of Morty he keeps in his wallet and pins it to the board.
