Very tired nerd who loves to yap
Ask me about floppa, Plan 9, computer architecture, computational logic, anything computers really (if you want)
:cat-vibing:
If I don’t reply to you it’s probably cuz I’m too tired, sorry :(
Yeah most of my attempts so far have started to just look like ECS x3
I’d love to use Rust but I’m just really concerned about portability. Rust support gets worse and worse the more one deviates from Windows or Linux. So instead I make myself suffer with an old language with very sharp edges.
My dream is to have this game be the first really fully-featured game that works on Plan 9/9front. Besides, portability is a good constraint that forces one to write better, universal code. And yeah, ideally I can preserve type safety but maybe I’ll do sketchy untyped pointer passing type stuff.
Yeah after Bell Labs closed a lot of the infrastructure started to rot. Check out https://9front.org/, it’s the most modern distribution.
Plan 9 seems to be a pretty weird operating system at first but I think it’s one of the most revolutionary developments in computer systems research to have happened in the last ~20 years. It hasn’t had much wider adoption but it’s influenced a lot of other systems throughout it’s lifetime. Very elegant and simple design.
True. Basically all useful computing technologies that humanity has have came out of institutions insulated from the “free-market system” and the corrupting influence of the profit motive. Eventually those technologies fell into the hands of the capitalist ghouls and we are left with a mockery of what they once were. Web 3.0 (and 2.0), Windows, Linux, PCs, NFTs, the various social media platforms, etc. This common heritage of humanity can only end up in a deformed state under capitalism, contorted into a morass of sprawling hardware and software complexity purpose-made to lock users into the use of closed systems only the monopolies can maintain. Even when the masses of people are forced to deal with this unreliable technology that entraps them and steals from them, we see even essential computing infrastructure maintained by either unpaid labor or by firms dependent on constant injections of capital from the state, investors, and fictitious capital. The socialism of the future is the socialism of cybernetics, liberatory computing, and automated computerized socialist economic planning.
I’m ready for my new Hexbear assigned fursona now
Where do the rats fit into this? I am a normal rat and I sniff.
