China, while allowing explicit criticism of the government, usually censors and prohibits critiques specifically calling for an organized protest movement. (see this study for a more scholarly account of that) I imagine that this student, in calling for a climate strike without working through government channels, has triggered that requirement and is thereby by “censored” in a way. Agree or disagree with the tactic as you will, but it’s how the CPC maintains control. By clamping down on protest movements that act outside normal channels, they hope to cut off avenues for movements to be co-opted by the Americans and other forces that would see China balkanized. The CPC is very happy for you to engage in criticism of their policies, so long as you do so from within the party and government apparatus. Working outside that apparatus is off limits, for better or worse.

Climate change and environmental degredation is not an issue any country on earth takes nearly seriously enough. This is just the reality, the modern world is built on top of environmental damage.

All political movements are interested in short term returns for their people and generally view austerity as a risky proposal that can cost them their power. Environmentalism is not an inherent left/right issue, it’s a debate over being pro economic growth or being against it in favor of a better environment.

It’s just that in the US you have significant support for degrowth among the left, but I doubt that’s universal. There’s probably a meaningful number of pro fracking leftists.

doubt

I don’t think (long-term) economic growth is at odds with environmental considerations - considering climate change is gonna fucking destroy the economy it’s in the best interests of a planned socialized economy to invest in environmentalism. Short-term profits for the 1% is the biggest driver of climate change not the wider long term economy

This tweet goes into detail.

Basically, the Party’s onto the environmental stuff. It knows people want change. It’s making that change.

It’s declared a goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2060. There are huge subsidies for solar panels, and it’s the world’s largest exporter. It uses its military for huge reforestation efforts.

There’s no need for a western-seeded social movement telling them to do what they’re already doing.

Thats literally worse than most other countries who are pledging 2050, and aren’t socialist.

Not only that but we need to be carbon neutral by 2030 at the latest or we are fucked.

They’re a developing nation, and well below their historical carbon budget per capita.

They’ve committed to peaking in 2030.

that doesn’t mean billions won’t suffer long term because of the party not taking drastic immediate action. that being said, it’s really mostly on the west and the global 1% not the majority of China.

Adding to what other posters have said, I would like point to this couple of paragraphs

Ou, who also goes by the English name Howey, suspended her studies in December 2018 after being told she was “not suitable” for the international programme there and decided to study for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and US college admissions SAT test on her own.

But, following the wishes of her parents, and with dreams of pursuing higher education, she has been attempting in recent months to re-enter the school.

An additional matter to consider is that she took up these activities some time after suspending her studies and, now that she actually wants to go back to the school, it is likely the latter has simply decided they would rather not deal with an unruly student that could potentially disrupt the every-day environment at the school.

This looks like it is very much a local matter, it is not as if the top CPC dogs or even Xi himself have suddenly developed a hate-boner for this particular girl and want to crush her.
