Re:Zero
I second Re:Zero. It’s one of those shows where you wonder why you waited so long to watch it after you start it.
Re:Zero - I barely made it thru the first season. It starts off pretty strong but deteriorates after a couple arcs when it hands the protagonist his romantic interest for no discernible reason. This means the series ends up as a standard boring wish fulfillment fantasy instead of a more thoughtful or interesting sustained examination of tropes. There are so many character design cliches I honestly haven’t been able to rewatch it. Later in s1, the whale arc, to me, felt interminable and utterly disconnected from any part of the plot I actually cared about.
That said, I can actually remember what happens in the first half of s1 pretty well and it aroused reasonably strong opinions in me. That means it stands out somewhat from most of the anime series I watch. If I were new to it I’d certainly watch the first 16 episodes or so.
It always really bothered me that the protag was a hikkiNEET but, once isekai’d he is the hardest worker around. That’s what made me like Konosuba so much more. Kasuma jerks off in the stables, hates working, yearns for true gender equality, etc. To me, one of my favorite things art can do is examine a psychological paradigm. I also greatly enjoyed Joker for this reason.
The unrepentant dirtbag protagonist is definitely one of the enjoyable things about KonoSuba.
I chalk up the “HikkiNEET to work-obsessed” trope as part of the wish fulfillment of isekai. One of the reasons people give up on RL is because of the lack of consistent rewards. If working really hard suddenly gave you a harem of compliant beauties, piles of gold, and widespread social validation it becomes easier to sustain. Compared to RL where working really hard makes more money for your boss.
I bombed out of this series at the start of the third arc. I think you kind of have to be willing to empathize with the incel protagonist and I’m really just not. it doesn’t really work if you don’t see yourself in him or at the least someone you care about and he just rubs me as an amalgamation of people who have really pissed me off over the years. there’s a small catharsis in watching him die gruesomely, I guess?
Log Horizon is a great isekai. It focuses a lot more on civilisation building and social structures than anything else I’ve watched.

Plus, the MC basically strangles capitalism in it’s grave by preventing most of Japan from being turned into private property, which is cool.

Depends what you’re after. Mainstream action and suspense? Re;Zero is legitimately good and does a fantastic job of displaying to the audience a very flawed character.
Off-shows? I also very much like the often not recommended Hai to Gensou no Grimgar for completely different reasons to the typical shonen isekai. This show slows things down, A LOT. It explores much more of the interpersonal relationships of the human beings involved, their flaws, their anxieties, the emotions of a group engaging in struggle within a world whose economy is savage to them and forces them into a type of labour that is life threatening.
It’s a legitimately under-rated show in the typical anime community because all that interpersonal exploration stuff just doesn’t do it for the usual audience. Its art and the execution of what it sets out to do however is absolutely brilliant. It is however very unlikely to get more seasons.
Log Horizon if you want inter-guild politics with big plans being executed mixed with light comedy. This is honestly one of my favourites, flaws and all. We also have a season 3 confirmed and on the way. Log Horizon probably executes the genre in the most game-like way and is obviously written by someone with a lot off mmo experience at a high level with all the inter-guild drama that entails.

The Saga of Tanya the Evil / Youjo Senki - From the same studio as Overlord. One of my favorite series, period. WWI + magic + a psychotic reincarnated loli. However the protagonist is an unrepentant capitalist and will be sent immediately to gulag.
No Game No Life - So much to love. A lush color palette and environment that’s fun to just stare at. A world where all war has been replaced by games and cleverness. There’s a bit of a fishy flavor when it comes to the protagonist’s loli younger sister, but imo the anime isn’t as bad as the LN for this.
Ascendance of a Bookworm / Honzuki no Gekokujou - Maybe the art looks a bit saccharine but this series is an interesting exploration of what happens in an isekai when you’re reborn as a sickly commoner girl instead of being handed a hero’s magic sword and a big breasted nekomimi girlfriend. The class structure of the world is explored and criticized in a meaningful way, which is a relief compared so much other isekai garbage.
The Rising of the Shield Hero / Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari - I’m going to list this just for the sake of listing it. It’s a popular series which is OK from an entertainment point of view. Very troubling when it makes excuses for literal slave ownership and detestably weaponizes tropes related to sexual assault. I certainly think it’s possible to overlook these things and still enjoy the series, just be aware of what you’re overlooking.
KonoSuba : God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! - Also listing this just for the sake of popularity. Very generic isekai harem setting which I had trouble getting into. However a lot of people enjoy the protagonist’s cynical personality. Not very deep which isn’t always bad.
I have a few comments about some of these:
Tanya is prefect evidence of why humans aren’t smart enough for satire. The author’s a leftist, as far as I know. Tanya’s supposed to be mocking fascism and neoliberalism, which goes right over a lot of people’s heads. It’s more obvious if you read the books, because you see more of Tanya’s thoughts.
Anyone going into Bookworm needs to put on their historical materialist hat. The show is critical of feudalism, but also puts capitalism as it’s opposition, and does not critique capitalism. Just be warned if you’re going into the show expecting something you can uncritically agree with politically.
I mean, technically Feudalism is worse than capitalism, but yeah the capitalist realism of the main character is honestly annoying.
