For those who don’t know: Every Jew has a “right of return”, and can request Israeli citizenship. The problem is, this also applies to (black) Ethiopian Jews. So when tens of thousends of them applied for citizenship, they were given contraceptives without their consent or knowledge. Despite the fact that the Israeli governement has admitted this, many still deny it . The retorical trick they use, is saying that it’s untrue that Israel “sterilised” Ethiopian Jews, which is technically a correct statement, because the Ethiopian Jews were given shots with contraceptives, which isn’t the same as sterilisation (but was highly effective nevertheless, given that the Ethiopian Jews only had about half as many children as the rest of Israelis) and makes it sound like the person who brought this subject up is a vile anti-semite.

That’s largely what he’s good for really. Nothing is going to come from electoralism in the current state, but him being out there, on the news and whatnot, does make it easier to talk about certain topics.

Well the Knesset took a hard, hard turn to the extreme, overtly Fascist right in the last elections and they’re now working to dismantle Israel’s liberal democracy. There’s no more pretense of Israel being the “only democracy in the middle east” anymore. The current government is no longer making any pretenses about what they are and what their goals are. I suspect that unless the IDF does something very smart like stage a coup soon then being openly critical of Israel is going to become a much safer political position. Israel is already polling badly with American Jews, especially younger Jews, and both Christian Fascists and Israeli Likudnik/Kahanists are directly attacking secular and Reform Jews, as well as some Conservative Jews, and saying they’re not really Jewish.

Israel has always been bad, but the new government are total nuts, an alliance between the worst elements of Likud, including Bibi, and the Kahanists, a hard-core right wing, radically orthodox movement that was banned for a long time because they were overtly engaged in terrorism against both Palestinian Arabs and more liberal Israeli Jews.

So the conditions on the ground have changed in dramatic, important ways. the aggressive Orthodoxy of the Kahanists is unlikely to play well with American Jews of any stripe. I doubt even the American Othodox movements think particularly well of them. They’re going to alienate anyone who isn’t already on board with fascism. I’m sure politicians will still try to use American Jews as a cudgel against anti-Zionist movements, but I think the credibility of that political ploy is going to drop rapidly.
