It reminds me of the purely symbolic Harry Potter book burnings when Rowling turned out to be a transphobe. There was a moral panic that WE’RE DOING BOOK BURNINGS, except nothing was lost. Still literally millions of copies out there. People are so obsessed with symbolism they forget that the danger of stuff like book burnings is that it had a material impact on what information is available.
Getting lots of people worked up and shouting around a big fire hacks in to all the religion parts of your brain. It’s emotionally affecting and powerful, makes you feel like you’re part of something bigger than yourself, etc etc.
