Not to mention…they show China, but it isn’t highlighted as a “Country with a Chinese base”

They can’t even do the colors on the Very Real And Scary Imperialism Map™ right

And the base is located in a country that leases land for military bases like it’s candy to any country that asks lol

And all those bases are for an international anti-piracy mission (though considering present circumstances it’s worth noting that different countries are operating on different definitions of the word “piracy”)

So are they saying that having overseas military bases is a bad thing now, or?

America, Britain and a handful of other military powers have a global network of bases that have existed for decades and are mostly legacies of empire, the second world war and the cold war.

“legacies of empire” lmao. “We’re not building new bases, just continuing to occupy 800 existing ones, so that totes makes our imperialism okay guys!”

Shoddy reporting here, The Economist is missing a few important ones like:

Countries that I had a wet dream about China hosting a base

Countries that start with the letter C, like China, that could have a base

Countries that China definitely hasn’t considered hosting a base in but might change their mind someday

The Economist is what happens when someone parses the first word of “Combat Liberalism” as an adjective instead of a verb.

Incredible. This should be a tagline.

Side note: I’ve never understood why 反对自由主义 in particular is translated to “Combat Liberalism” instead of “Oppose Liberalism” since all of Mao’s other works that start with 反对 are translated as “Oppose”, the most famous being 反对本本主义 “Oppose Book Worship”
