Hi :mao-wave: I’m one of the new mods of c/worldbuilding. What kind of content do you want c/worldbuilding to promote and what do you want to see?

The :reddit-logo: version isn’t that bad, but they have the problem of “here’s an essay about my world” with very little engagement in the comments. Something to generate discussion maybe. The :reddit-logo: usually has rotating posts like “tell me about the X in your world,” but I don’t think we have the userbase to do the same thing.

Maybe you can give semi-regular prompts that are related to leftism/communism. Stuff like “How you would design worker’s revolution in a world with fantasy races.” Or more generic would work too.

Seconding this, this is a pretty niche corner that won’t have the contributor count of :reddit-logo: so regular prompts and discussion posts are going to be the main content, probably.

Those are good ideas! Do you have anything else you can think of?

Something similar but with a piece of art or a map. One other common gripe with the :reddit-logo: is that art/map posts can dominate the feed because art gets upvotes, but then the comments are bare. So like post a fantasy map without names or borders or anything and ask people “what’s some lore for this” just as a creative exercise.

Otherwise, people go to the :reddit-logo: sub to get feedback/workshop their world. Idk a good way to encourage that. “Featured World Workshop” could work as a stickied post that stays up for a few days.

To add on the second stanza, I’d like to see more discussions of how socialist concepts and analysis (ie dialectical materialism) would work. Like, the Divine Right of Kings actually being tangible would change quite a few things.

Is this worldbuilding in the sense of writing and generating fictional settings, or only limited to things like maps and vexillology?

If it’s the former, I think occasional articles about worldbuilding would be cool for discussion. Maybe having discussion topics where we talk about different aspects of worldbuilding like language or magic systems?

Sometimes you’ll see authors putting out articles on worldbuilding and their experiences with it or someone will have a ‘don’t’ list of things and we could either agree with certain points or disagree.

The other thought I was suggesting was something like discussing a fictional setting occasionally, like Avatar the Last Airbender, and talk about what we see that works or what could be hard or problematic to emulate. Just adding a layer of media criticism to the worldbuilding, I guess.

I often think about writing up such a world, but there would be nothing but unimportant personal squabbbles to write about. The world would just be too good to make for interesting writing imo

Worldbuilding? Like we plan to build new worlds to sell to the super rich intergalactic community here? (I love the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy)
