Finland- we’ve got forced conscription for men, though you can also opt for civilian service, which typically lasts longer (12 months vs 6, 9 or 12 months.) Alternatively, you won’t need to do either if you have some sort of mental or physical health condition that prevents military service, which worked out brilliantly for me

Hmm, well at least your country sounds nice, universal things and all that, and aren’t involved in any dark shit ¿or is it?. What’s the supposed purpose of mandatory military service there nowadays? General brainwashing or still scared about russian invasion? What’s this civilian service? pick trash, plant trees and things like that?

While we’re not part of NATO, Finland still takes part in a bunch of joint EU and UN peacekeeping operations, and as far as I know, we haven’t taken part in anything too morally reprehensible. While life in Finland or the other Nordic countries is probably way nicer for the average Joe than in the US, there’s a neverending army of awful neoliberal ghouls who absolutely cannot wait to get into power to dismantle the welfare state and privatise everything, and much like other European social democracies, we’ve sadly had our fair share of that already over the past few decades.

General brainwashing or still scared about russian invasion?

Let’s just say it’s not the Estonians or Swedes we’re worried about. Most of the people I know who were in the army liked their time there in general, and the institution seems to be regarded pretty positively. Still, there are people who feel pressured into going into military service by their dipshit conservative dads, and there are occasional suicides among servicemen. You also can’t just refuse military or civilian service (only Jehova’s Witnesses are exempted), and every year there’s a few conscientious objectors who end doing jail time.

What’s this civilian service? pick trash, plant trees and things like that?

A friend of mine worked at a hospital for a year, helping out elderly patients specifically, reading their newspapers for them, etc
