Everything I see from lemmy is bad and I have no desire to sign up or use it, hexbear stays winning.

Lemmygrad is good, though a bit sectarian. Lemmy.ml used to be mostly good, but it’s been inundated with reddittors lately.

It’s going to be the leftypol akin to 8chan all over again. The liberals in their zeal to flush out any comrades are going to open the doors for fascists to step right in and they’ll be left with their thumb up their ass going “uhhh how’d that happen???”

OK, so I have an account from another instance, how do I post on federated servers exactly? I’m sorry, new at this shit. I want to :im-doing-my-part:

Yeah, unfortunately Lemmygrad retained quite a bit of the reddit toxicity, just from a M-L perspective. It’s about a 75:25 split on great users and people who just hypocritically flip out and start insulting people.

I actually liked Lemmygrad better than hexbear (technically chapo.chat) initially, tons of effortposts and a friendly environment. I felt like I learned a lot and had good interactions. When genzedong got banned it felt like the place got really hostile overnight. I ended up blocking a couple of the more antagonistic lemmygrad users (who may be gone now for all I know) and also blocked a few communities that were (imo) overly obnoxious. That did help some, but the end result was me spending less time on lemmy and more time on hexbear.

Also at one point there was even a community entirely dedicated to attacking the lemmy.ml devs (I think they called it “shit lemmy.ml devs say”), which was initially created in response to a three day ban for an exchange I missed entirely because I had already blocked the user in question. To me it was infuriating, the lemmy devs have been fantastic and deserve all the praise in the world.

I will say that I haven’t spent significant time on lemmygrad specifically for a long while, so maybe (hopefully) they’re not as toxic as they were in the past. I do still use lemmy some, never really stopped, just slowed down when most of the threads were angry stuff from lemmygrad.

All this federation stuff makes me think of the outer system Anarchists in Eclipse Phase. They’re not one polity - It’s thousands of different tiny habs and ships and hollowed out iceballs floating out in the trans-jovian sphere. But they’re all sort of loosely aligned, at least enough that they talk to each other and trade data and some materials, and if anyone from outisde their loose alliance tries to fuck with them it suddenly becomes all for one and one for all.

That’s the fun part. Once we federate, you won’t have to.
