One of my favourite lines from the game (MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR THE LAST 30 MINUTES)

spoiler

The Deserter: He opens his eyes and stares right through you. “It was real. I’d seen it. I’d seen it in reality.”

Half-Light: Some kind of great terror. Worse than what you’ve seen. You: “Seen what?”

spoiler

The Deserter: “The mask of humanity fall from capital. It has to take it off to kill everyone - everything you love; all the hope and tenderness in the world. It has to take it off, just for one second. To do the deed. And then you see it. As it strangles and beats your friends to death… the sweetest, most courageous people in the world,” he’s silent for a second. “You see the fear and power in its eyes. Then you know.”

You: “What?”

spoiler

The Deserter: “That the bourgeois are not human.”

I’m re-reading Capital. I read the first volume last year, but had a hard time following it, so this time I’m using Harvey’s companion book to help me keep stuff straight. So far I’ve realised that I understood less than 10% of the book last time

Yes please. I might not be able to use them because I’ve already got too much stuff around me when reading it. I have Capital, Harvey’s book, and my notes that I’ve been making. Plus I think I’d get really distracted if I had a computer by me when I’m trying to read. But if you could tell me where to find them I’d be sort of interested. Going through everything a third time wouldn’t hurt my understanding. Thanks

The China chat on the discord really made me understand this. Like Cuba, for example, has democracy, on a local level. It’s more democratic than the US. Debate is allowed, and most speech is free, except, to paraphrase Castro, speech that supports the US. All of this is within one political party. Now the US might have two parties, but we all know that, in reality, there’s only one party; the bourgeois party. Dunno where I’m going with this, I’m pretty drunk.

Yes. I’m guessing you ran out of morale? Did the union boss get you? Most of the time if you fail a check, as long as you still have health/morale, you can either keep progressing, or try again later. Plus the game is the most leftist game ever made.

Disco Elysium and HBomberguy ruined RPGs for me. I’m not sure if I hate them or love them for that

I know right? Like DE has three concurrent narratives; the murder case, the detective’s mental state, and political struggle. The case is only really important as a vehicle for the others. Playing the game, it’s really obvious that a), the devs are comrades, and b), they care a lot more about the political philosophy and how it manifests in Harry than the case itself.

The deserter’s island

resolves all the important parts of the game.

I would highly recommend trying it again. It’s probably one of the greatest games ever made. Just make sure you save often (but don’t save scum, the game’s funnier if you don’t) and explore to find some healing items before you do anything important. You can also heal in the middle of dying, btw.

Not completely Civ6 related, but Civ4 is the game that radicalised me.

Also Civ6 good. I play it a lot when climate anxiety gets to me, because if I research rush I can completely skip coal/oil/nuclear, and that makes the endorphin and dopamine emitters go ‘pew pew’

I spent like 10 hours in the fishing trawler trying to radicalise people. It went better than expected tbh
