I’m not very strongly opinionated about or experienced with Nintendo games, but every time I’ve seen gameplay of New Super Mario Bros or whatever 3D-but-a-sidescroller Mario thing it has a really weird cheap look. It looks like a bunch of 3D assets in front of a flat background, it doesn’t feel visually cohesive at all to me.

NSMB1 has koopa mario which was fun. None of the other ones have nearly as good a power up. The artstyle does suck. TBH I kinda like the OG NSMB cause it was like “hey what if we brought some 3D Mario mechanics (triple jump, wall jump, the bosses in the first one, collectibles) jnto 2D Mario”. But every other one has just been more of the same.
