Ah yes, China’s secret nuclear powered stealth fishing fleet completely capable of sneaking through Japanese, South Korean, Russian, and US waters

Maybe it’s actually the ghosts of dead Chinese crab fishers.

I’m being a bit slow, what’s the implication here?

permalink

reply

I could be wrong but I think the implication is that after that reported population boom something happened to that environment that made it significantly less hospitable to crabs, and now there’s nowhere near the number we expected

This is terrible. Henry Kissinger is 99 years old and we need every single one of those crabs on standby.

Sea crab, pinchers versus land crab, no pinchers. I’d allow it

It’s likely due to the cold pool of water on the bottom of the Bering Sea moving north (i.e. shrinking) due to climate change at a faster rate than the juveniles can migrate, which leaves them extremely vulnerable to predation by various groundfish species. Surely losing (even temporarily, depending on how effective a rebuilding plan can even be in the face of changes caused by rapid ecosystem shifts compared to just overexploitation) a cornerstone of the most important industry in Alaska will cause the state government to start taking climate change seriously right?

Ah look, acidification has moved on up from fucking over stony corals to fucking over less fickle and fragile organisms such as giant crabs, how reassuring and totally not alarming.

This is all so terrifying. There’s nothing we can do to stop this now. Even if we cut off the entire industrial economy of the world it would take thousands of years for the ocean to heal.

Yeah but it’s not like crabs are the fungi of the sea, eating the biomass on the bottom and recycling its energy into higher trophic levels. They’re not major algae feeders which suppress the blooms from our agricultural runoff. :this-is-fine:

Those darn sneaky Russians and Chinese snuck over and stole 1 billion of our crabs and that’s I am arguing for a 1.5 trillion dollar military budget
