Dissent is often crushed

What the fuck happened to the original BLM organisers?

After seeing how free they were and how racism is invented, they were all so struck with grief over their role in stoking conflict and tarnishing democracy that they didn’t even take the time to write a suicide note.

I dunno how accurate this translation is or how paraphrased it was, but it slaps.

Young President Biden must have eaten too much KFC and McDonald’s, leading to a belief that democracy is like a fast-food chain with the United States supplying the ingredients.

This is why I laugh at people talking about Chinese media like they’re constantly pulling off subtle psy-ops.

Nope, they’re heavy-handed and make really dumb analogies all the time lol. It’s 100% Boomer humor.

49% of Americans think they live in a democracy, compared to 95% 73% of Chinese

EDIT: I had the wrong statistic, corrected.

Most Americans genuinely think that if that high of a percentage of a population agree on a poll that it means the poll must be fake because there’s no way that many people all agree.

In America if you say “getting sick and dying is bad” 30% of the population will disagree.

if you say “everyone should have access to water” you’ll probably get like a 70% disagreement ratio

I think it’s about 70%. 95% is the CPC central government’s approval rating.

I’m guessing some level of that 51% are saying “we’re a republic, not a democracy”

so dumb because afaict republic just means you’re not a monarchy

it’s even more dumb because they’re the same word. Republic comes from Latin, res publicus, which is like “ruled by the public/people.” Democracy comes from Greek, dēmos kratia, which is also like “ruled by the people.”

Is “crushing dissent” even strictly undemocratic if they’re serving the interests of the majority of their citizens? Might be a strange angle to take in response to this, but honestly, I don’t think tolerance or intolerance of dissent is even related to the definition of democracy at all.

Agreed. Slave owners dissent when you free the slaves, and that dissent should be crushed.

I think it’s kind of hard to move there but I’m going to be looking into it more myself. I’ve been living in Latin America (I’m from the US) for a few months now and I do speak a tiny bit of Mandarin after studying it in college but it’s not exactly an easy language for me.
