Basically the movie Paranormal Activity, but the “apparition” that stands in the bedroom and watches them sleep is the guy from whom they’re renting the condo.

I feel like you could do something with a monster that makes the world unlivable unless you enter into a “symbiotic” relationship with it which is constantly deteriorating.

Like in exchange for your blood it makes you able to live in the hellscape it’s created, but it wants a little more every time.

That scene from The Shining but instead of “Here’s Johnny!” it’s “Where’s my rent? This door is coming out of your security deposit!”

Make it some kind of existential horror where the days continuously repeat as your body and mind slowly wear down. Basically groundhogs day except every day really is the same under a capitalist reality.

This kind of reminds me of Russian Doll and also Happy Death Day in slightly different ways

spoiler

Both have protagonists who die and relive the same day repeatedly, but in RD the main character starts to notice that the world around her is wearing down each time, with less people in it, random objects disappearing and produce rotting. In HDD, the main character basically emerges from each death slightly weaker, as if it was an old wound she’d, partially, never fully, recovered from.
