Honestly the idea of what Odo was doing under the occupation was interesting but the writers didn’t do a good enough job fleshing it out or exploring the moral complexities of it.

The whole idea was that the Cardassians thought putting a neutral party in charge of law enforcement would make thing fairer and quell Bajorian resistance, and Odo did actually try and fulfill that role to the best of his abilities but eventually realized that Cardassian rule was inherently unjust even if he tried to administer it justly. Kind of a cool moral quandary but I think the writers kind of fumbled with it. Like I can buy that many of the Bajorians would respect Odo for switching sides but none of them ever bring up that, even if he did it as fairly as he could, he was still enforcing the law of an occupational fascist government. Supporting the resistance in the end may have been due penance but you’d think some Bajorians would give him the side eye.

Also Dukat did nothing wrong.

Edit: clearly we got some newbie users cuz nobody remembers that “Dukat apologists” was a bit popular like 6 months ago.

growing the productive forces for an entry into the galactic community is a thankless job. whats worse is revisionists and terrorists interrupted the 12th five year plan just when it was showing promise. Federation heads never seem to mention that. do they mention the labor camp fatalities were reduced by 30% one month into the Dukat administration? of course not!

the Fed/Terrorist/Revisionist bias in this thread is dispicable

Dukat’s arc of “I was actually a kind dictator” to “I should have killed them all because they never loved me” was so good.

Just goes absolutely nuts because the people he oppressed don’t love him.

I’m gonna have to ask you to walk yourself into the gulag for that one. Dukat literally says time and time again that Cardassians are ethnically a superior species. my guy is a literal fascist. a fascist who works with the federation when both are forced against the Dominion, but a fascist none the less

Constable is just a nickname. While Odo may have been a cop under the Cardassians, under Sisko he served the same function as a security officer would on a ship making him no more a police than Tuvok or Tasha Yarr

What is the source of Odo’s authority? I don’t think it was the Federation – Bajor wasn’t part of the Federation, and although Starfleet administered DS9 it appeared to operate outside of ordinary Federation law. It might have been Bajoran authority, but I don’t remember the specifics of the Bajoran/Starfleet arrangement on station governance. A third option is some local source of authority (maybe the station was effectively its own entity, with its own regulations).

Odo serves at the behest of the Bajoran government as kind of a compromise with the federation iirc

Good question, and one that was also at points not clearly answered in the show, as when Starfleet tried to edge him out

They’re naval officers in an exploration fleet. They aren’t even MPs in that navy, which do exist

It isn’t an empire, it’s a non-binding federation of equally represented member states.

He was a cop under the occupation, but he was manipulated via Cardassian propaganda and bureaucracy that took advantage of his innate sense of justice and corrupted it.

Once shown a better way partly by the federation, and mostly by the Freedom fighter Kira Nerys he completely disowns that part of his life and takes deep shame and regret in it.

He fully becomes anti fascist, like even contemplating going against Sisko a couple of times, throughout the show and hates Cardassians with a very specific kind of passion due to their attempt at indoctrinating him.

Ds9 is rad because it shows how people in all ranks of the fascistic Cardassians society are exploited in differing ways.

DS9 had the best villains ever. Go to Youtube and watch some DS9 clips with Cardassians and it’ll start recommending more of them for you. Some of the scenes are completely badass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDpxuWj2A7o

Dukat and Weyoun talking scenes are so good because it also sets up Damar and Weyoun.

You can tell that none of these characters like each other but Dukat thinks and acts like he’s in control and getting the better part of the deal. Damar is genuinely upstaged and embarrassed by Weyoun at every point.

Weyoun instantly catches on that Damar is not as big a believer in Cardassian ideology and the Dominion membership and teases him at every second for it. Weyoun in general is so good at being both polite and cruel, depending on the situation. He knows exactly how to please and irritate everyone he meets.

They actually bring that up in an episode, he was never an executioner but considers himself just as responsible for allowing them to happen.

It’s also the same episode that explores his indoctrination and the differences between an orderly society and a just one.

The show doesn’t tell you to look the other way or anything like that, it rams that shit at you all throughout the series.
