maybe the left leaders in South America have gotten less based because now they don’t have to worry about disappointing Fidel anymore

Has more to do with playing it smart and not getting assassinated. Anyone too far left often gets offed before they can take power. Once they do, it’s hard for the CIA to overthrow them (see Venezuela)

I mean Allende was in office but he was still killed. Though reactionary forces were ripe in the government, similarly to Brazil right now with the recent coup attempt.

Not being a radical has never stopped the CIA from killing or couping popular leftist leaders in LatAm. A lot of CIA-backed repression in LatAm in the late 20th century eas against lame ass reformists or socdems. It doesn’t have anything to do with radicality, any vaguely leftist economic program will go against American interests, which is why despite being a super republican socdem Lula was politically persecuted.
He isn’t being smart, he’s being naive.
