As a scientist, I can tell you that peer review in many fields is effectively an opinion checking process. It’s necessary but not even close to sufficient to ensuring the literature is high quality. Most of the referee comments I receive on my articles have nothing to do with methodology or data, and everything to do with opinion and tone. It’s incredibly depressing. It is not uncommon to have a referee recommend the editor to reject the paper simply because the findings are in contrast to the opinions held by said referee. This is why so many articles each year are retracted, receive notices of concern, negative pubpeer comments, etcetera. The replication crisis is the embodiment of this. It is not enough for two other researchers to check the p-values are significant, then whine about causal language and that’s it.

My most cited study is mostly mis-citations. People either cite it as the source of the methodology we used (it isn’t) or literally cite it as justification for the opposite conclusion to the one we drew. It’s nuts. And I feel the same about the proudest work thing. I’ve worked SO hard on some papers which barely have any reads, let alone citations.

If the CW isn’t enough for you, then stop following /c/food. It’s that simple. Honestly, I have nothing against you but this is a you problem. You chose to click on this post etc. If you need to isolate yourself from content such as this, do so.

Even if it were physically possible to pull 24 hour shifts with no break every week (it isn’t), this would still only amount to 52k per year. If you have student loans and a mortgage you will still be living paycheck-to-paycheck on this insane work schedule.
