When Lief Ericson landed in Vineland (modern day Newfoundland, Canada) in about 1000 CE, he settled at a place now known as L’Anse aux Meadows. The Norse people were reportedly in conflict with people they called Scraelings, which would be the indigenous people of Newfoundland, the Beothuk people.

While the Norse were successfully repelled from the new world, the next invaders (the french and spanish) unfortunately were not.

The Beothuk people were hunted (yes actually hunted) to extinction. Genocide and mass killings. The last Beothuk woman died in slavery in about 1820.

Listen up you vegans, I know eating vegan is more expensive, takes more time, is incredibly unhealthy, and is complicated as hell. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do to change that

-Here is a recipe-

Did you know you can cook lentils in a rice cooker? Did you know you can cook lentils in a rice cooker at the same time as rice?

Ingredients

-1/3 Cup dry rice

-1/3 Cup Dry red split lentils

-1/2 cup of vegetable stock

-1 cup of water

Process

  1. Put all ingredients in a rice cooker.

  2. Press start

  3. That’s it

Obviously this could be done in a pot on a stove if you don’t have a rice cooker, just follow your normal process for cooking rice. You can add some sauce for flavour at the end if you wish, hot sauce or sweet chili or something.

Prep time: Hours I assume

Cooking time: probably a couple days?

Nutrition: Like all vegan meals this has zero protein, and is lacking in many essential nutrients. High in inflammation and anti-nutrients

Cost: You are going to have to get a payday loan to afford the ingredients for this one folks. Thats is if you can even find these specialty ingredients in the food deserts we all live in

My go to cheap protein (other than beans and tofu and all the other great answers in here) is Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP). Sometimes called textured soy protein.

Basically when the make soy bean oil they squeeze all the oil out of the beans and TVP is what’s left. Soy its basically soy beans without any fat.

You can get at bulk food stores for maybe 7$ a kg or so? Its about 50% protein by weight., and doesn’t need to be refrigerated You can use it as a sort of mince or hamburger replacement in any meals you make. It doesn’t really have a natural taste you will have to flavour with spices etc. Here is a recipe i make often

I mix warm water and soy sauce, a splash rice wine vinegar, a small spoon of miso and a drop of sesame oil. Put that all in a bowl with about 40g of TVP, let it rehydrate( which only takes about 1 minute) and you’re done.

I aim for a texture that is a little more firm kind of like crumbled Tuna, then mix it all with rice .

Easy meal 2 seconds to make, nothing needs to be refrigerated, and has more than 20g of protein. Cost is under 1$.
