People would always go off about how awful of a change Gnome 3 was for the FOSS community but really, the other day I was installing PopOS for my partner’s computer since it was low spec and Windows would have been awful for them, and it was just so striking how nice it felt to use Gnome on PopOS these days. Maybe it’s because I’ve been using i3wm for too long? Thoughts, comments, rants about how KDE is so much better than Gnome?

YES I know exactly what you mean with KDE, I have friends who will swear their life on it but to me it does just feel so janky in small little ways I can’t even describe.

I was using Gnome3, but ran into memory issues on my old laptop with limited memory. So, I’m using xfce now.

My experience with Gnome 3 has always been more or less like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3TvORNCMfw

I think it’s the only cohesive, well designed desktop environment in Linux. For a long time it had bad performance and used a lot of memory, but I persevered with it and now it’s also pretty fast. I’ve been using it since 3.2 or 3.4, I think. Originally with a lot of extensions, but now I just run vanilla.

GNOME 3 was absolute dogshit at launch. Linus talked trash, Debian dropped it as default for a couple years it ran like garbage, GTK was a shit-hog, and a bunch of GNOME 2 forks/clones popped up that are still popular today. It has improved remarkably since then, and Pop is very good, but it hasn’t shaken that legacy with some people.
