I use MPV to play podcasts. Recently, when mpv plays certain podcast audio, it’s completely silent. It prints no warning, increasing decreasing the volume has no effect, nor does toggling mute. But otherwise it acts like there’s nothing wrong.

What’s the most strange is that it’s only for files that came from any patreon subscription feed and it’s only mpv. mpv can play audio from any other file and vlc doesn’t have any problems with the patreon audio. Older patreon audio files that I have cached also don’t work. So it’s not like patreon changed their encoding format. But they must’ve been doing something fancy all along and now mpv has changed and does not support it.

I’d post this to stackexchange but I figure I could get someone with a patreon subscription who uses mpv more easily here.

I have no configuration of mp3 or ffmpeg. It should all be default. Can’t say the same for whatever alsa+pulse+pipewire+wireplumber insanity is going on with linux audio
