Hunger skyrocketed in Brazil during the tenure of former president Jair Bolsonaro. 33 million Brazilians, some 15% of the entire country, are now food insecure according to official statistics. As Brazil’s poorest were abandoned to deal with the overlapping crises of COVID-19 and inflation, the MST, or Brazil’s Landless Workers’ Movement, stepped in. With 20 million hectares of reclaimed land under their control across 1,200 municipalities, the MST possessed the necessary base of land and labor to effectively make a difference for millions of Brazilians. TRNN reports from the ground in Brazil to investigate how the largest social movement in the Americas is simultaneously eliminating hunger, seizing land for the tillers, and fighting for agrarian reform.
I once had a lib claim that “socialists are all white boys, POC don’t want socialism.” When I pointed out that the MST is socialist and comprised mostly of indigenous and minority Brazilians, they accused me of “stealing valor.”
The real “stealing valor” that happens in leftist circles online is when MLs and anarchists get into shitfights about who betrayed who over a 100 years ago and how that mean we cannot trust each other or work together etc.
It’s so annoying.
Like, none of you were there. These people, whether in Paris or Russia or Germany or Spain fucking fought actual wars. You shitpost on Twitter and Reddit and Discord. Grow the fuck up.
Not to sound too much like a right wing crank, but it does get supremely annoying when people online, who for the most part are white, try to use either indigenous or POC as an argument in themselves. Also when liberals claim in anyway to speak for indigenous people in the Americas, they can just be assumed to be making shit up wholecloth, or they’re quoting some gusano in florida.
