tldr; there is a cohort of “white-proximal” people who try to punch down at Black people (and other obviously non-white people) in order to identify themselves with whites.
The biggest cohort come from Latinos, but significant cohorts would also come from MENA people and mixed people.
Also, “white” people are just mixed race Indo-euro-mena mutts from the bronze age, and skin color has no inherent tie to ancestry (which is why there are 65% West African people around who have near-white skin). Population genetics being made mandatory in schools could have made everyone less racist but libs gonna lib and cede ground to reality-denying wignats every fucking time

This is also why Europeans of today have highly mixed eye and hair colors, ranging from lightest blue to almost darkest brown.
The blue eyes come from Indigenous Europeans, while the brown eyes come from Indoeuropeans and MENA people proper.
Finnish people are 35% European, but you can find brown eyed Finns.
Sicilians are 3% European, but you can find blue eyed Sicilians.

Same reason other folks that were considered non-white by Anglo rules went down that path: a faction opened up to accept them at the expense of another group to marginalize. US society has always made sure that it is primarily black people who get marginalized, but others are often along for the ride as part of reaction. Right now, reaction is fixated on trans people as well and they use transphobia as a recruitment tool.
That’s a proximal (and still partial, of course) explanation.
Material conditions are a huge actor behind all of it. Simple demographics makes the maintenance of current overt white supremacist race rules less and less tenable without (re)instituting explicit apartheid or other forms of explicit violence that aren’t on the table (yet). Marginalized groups serve as a valuable scapegoat for bourgeois interests, especially during degrading conditions: it’s not the owners’ fault you got fired, things are bad due to X group stealing your job, moral decay from a loss of traditional values, and Y group not contributing their “fair share”. Marginalization also serves to create an underclass that can become more exploited, mistreated, and underserved than the overclasses (basically by definition), which is also invaluable for the illusion of progress and material gain for workers that would otherwise discover solidarity through shared dignity.
So, marginalization is reproduced by capitalism and the targets shift over time through a mishmash of causes. The important part is that those changes that bring (parts of) a marginalized group into the mainstream will come at the expense of another, as capitalism is degrading imperial core conditions through its internal processes and will fight against the ruling class taking the blame.
The short of it is that shit is going down and there’s a subset of hispanic people that are becoming “white” in terms of US racial categorizations, feeding into existing anti-black and related reactionary cultures just like Irish and Italians did, albeit with today’s cultural flavors.
