I’ll be putting up effortposts and essays on the bulletins site, both to signalboost it a little more to people who mostly use the RSS feed, and mainly also to preserve them while the site devs need to make posts and comments beyond a few months ago unsearchable. And also to have it one full piece instead of split across multiple posts/comments due to the character limit.

So if you wanna write a long piece up on something you’re interested in, or summarize a book or concept similarly to @shipwreck, then you can both write it up as a post (for the internet points and comment notifications), and, if you want, let me know (or I’ll ask you permission) to put it on the site.

Resources For Understanding The War Beyond The Bulletins

Defense Politics Asia’s youtube channel and their map. I recommend their map more than the channel at this point, as an increasing subscriber count has greatly diminished their quality.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have good analysis (though also a couple bad takes here and there)

Understanding War and the Saker: neo-conservative sources but their reporting of the war (so far) seems to line up with reality better than most liberal sources. Beware of chuddery.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are fairly brainworm-free and good if you don’t want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. The Duran, of which he co-hosts, is where the chuddery really begins to spill out.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent journalist reporting in the Ukrainian warzones.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR’s former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR’s forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ Gleb Bazov, banned from Twitter, referenced pretty heavily in what remains of pro-Russian Twitter.

https://t.me/asbmil ~ Now rebranded as Battlefield Insights, they do infrequent posts on the conflict.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday Patrick Lancaster’s telegram channel.

https://t.me/riafan_everywhere ~ Think it’s a government news org or Federal News Agency? Russian language.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ Front news coverage. Russian langauge.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of the really big pro-Russian (except when they’re being pessismistic, which is often) telegram channels focussing on the war. Russian language.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a ‘propaganda tax’, if you don’t believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Any Western media outlet that is even vaguely liberal (and quite a few conservative ones too).

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Last week’s discussion post.

You can tell when this thread is featured again. It’s like we’re in suspended animation with only the core users keeping this thread running when something else is featured in its stead, and then it’s featured and suddenly the blood starts flowing again.

I never have anything valuable to say here, but this thread is part of my morning routine. Love to see what Z Gang is up to.

Don’t feel like you have nothing to add. This is not a Ukraine war thread but a news thread and all contributions are welcome. Tell us about whatever news are happening where you live, or in the niches you know about. A local news story from somewhere nobody knows about can be a good illustration of a wider tendency.

If I’m at my computer, I have a bookmark for the news subbear, but when I’m out and about the extra effort (and sometimes buggy interface) means the news subbear is harder to access.

EU Commissioner lets slip that more than 100,000 Ukrainian troops have died in the war. They edited it out for social media posts.

Love how they’re making their own court because the already existing ones can’t selectively punish Russia while ignoring western war crimes. Something also tells me that the “International” cooperation in that will just be white countries and wannabe white countries.

And if they seize the 300bn then that’ll lead to the end of euro as a reserve currency around the world.

Just a side comment on this: Based on the number of Ukrainians in the field at any one time (around 600k, from memory), this is pretty bad (for Ukraine).

Casualties traditionally mean “people rendered combat ineffective”, not just killed, and with modern medicine, body armour etc. you’d expect a lot more wounded/maimed than killed.

PoW numbers seem pretty low this war, I think. We’re pretty used to asymmetric warfare where civilians behind lines are sort of like PoWs (many combatants can just drop their guns and wear jeans). There haven’t really been any major encirclements despite both sides trying to set them up, which is where a lot of PoWs come from, barring Azovstal style last stands.

I assume Ukraine still has a lot of people in the “combat aged males” category, but the first choices (16-30) are probably suffering a lot.

EDIT: This isn’t really a tactical or operational concern, but rather concerning for Ukraine’s already bleak prospects post-war. Strategically, the casualty rate is concerning, but Ukraine isn’t riding off their own industry for the most part, so this probably won’t shorten the war.

That’s the cope number too, it’s likely well over 200,000 now. Russian deaths are likely 25,000 or so, with another 30,000 DPR/LPR/mercenary deaths

Where was the edited version posted to though? Like after the initial recording, it was then edited to cover up that part. …but then posted where? Cant find the original source of edited posting.

Looks like posted by the EU commissioner herself to twitter. So then, where was the original unedited recording originally posted? By some other EU source or televised somewhere, or?

When Ursula von der Leyen (lead image) was nominated in 2019 to be Germany’s candidate to lead the European Commission, German politicians from her own party privately described her as too stupid and potentially too corrupt to be risked inside Germany during the political succession race to succeed Angela Merkel as Chancellor. German military sources say von der Leyen was the stupidest defence minister in German military memory.

Since the war began in February, von der Leyen did not say a true word until November 30, when she announced that Ukrainian military deaths had reached more than 100,000, and civilian fatalities more than 20,000. Within hours these numbers were removed from the published record of her speech. Von der Leyen’s admission implied the war toll of Ukrainian wounded is more than 300,000, and that the sum of military and civilian casualties has already reached half a million. Von der Leyen was confirming Russian estimates and contradicting the Kiev regime’s propaganda.

I mean, this might be the most relatable I have felt that Germany’s leadership has been in a while. When Danish politicians have a public “oops” moment, like getting drunk and singing german songs while making funny arm motions, or “accidentally” having sex with a 15-year old while at a youth party conference, we also tend to send them to the EU, despite the EU being arguably way more powerful in every day danish life than the parliament. It’s a fun kind of “out of sight out of mind” type of behaviour.

Similarly, Denmark has also sometimes offered the job of Minister for Foreign Affairs as a way to get a potential rival to fuck off during your tenure as prime minister. Supposedly Lars Løkke, our former prime minister, liked using that one. This was done despite the fact that Denmark has basically no power in international affairs apart from whatever deals we can strike with the actually powerful nations, which gives our foreign affairs minister a huge amount of power.

Zelensky will always say some completely vapid, nonsensical shit like “While you’re all spending the holidays watching From Russia with Love, in Ukraine we have to deal with From Russia with Hate” and liberals will go full :soypoint-1: :soypoint-2: and it will get published as front page news in every Western media outlet.
