Rostam was originally suposed to be a comedic figure (hercules too). But as values changed over thousands of years those stories were sanitised to fit modern values and tastes.
The figth with esfandiar wich is presented in the shahname as a tragedy should be in my opinion a hilarious event. Thinl about it the guy spends all day wacking the other dude with a comically oversized mace but it does nothing because the other guy was blesd with invulneravility. Thats looney toons shit rigth there.

i stand by rostam and iskandar being pretty funny and other legendary parts. unfortunately it gets less silly as it gets closer to real history
