I find it interesting that Shadow the Hedgehog is one of the only characters in the Sonic game canon to have a fully fleshed out backstory and motivation. Seriously, not one game explores Sonic’s background or why he fights against Robotnik, and the rest of the cast is lucky if they have a single defining goal like “get Sonic to be my boyfriend” or “get the Master Emerald” - but Shadow’s over here with a fully realized past where his adoptive sister’s killing by the government left a deep scar on the hedgehog that motivates him at first to finish the work of his adoptive father figure and later to abandon his death drive and try to be a good person.
