obviously, i assume they are just as racist but just present differently, but is it polite racism like in the south, or more aggressive like the north east. what about anti antisemitism?

As far as antisemitism goes, I’ve experienced tons of it in the US. Both the polite confusion and the violent “crash your car into another car while you’re standing halfway out your window so you can scream slurs at a pedestrian” kind.

Here in Canada, the only antisemitism I’ve experienced has been “wait da joos are just normal people and not universally cartoon supervillains?” type shit from new Ukrainian immigrants in the past 2 years so

Ime it is genuinely significantly less racist. Now, it’s still very racist though just because the bar is so low in America

It’s mostly polite racism in the urban centers. Rarely aggressive in the more rural areas. Much less anti-semitism

Most racism here is against immigrants (particularly Indians), indigenous people, and foreigners (particularly Chinese people)

There’s very few black and Hispanic people compared to the US but it’s still a lot better for them, according to friends/ex’s. Way less unhappy stares and avoiding them in public

In general though the specific forms racism takes place is literally the exact same in America. Black and Arab people are aggressive and scary, East + South Asians are meek, deceiving, and an invading horde, indigenous and SEAsians are dirty and criminals, etc.

The worst thing about Canada is that racism against Indian immigrants and Chinese people used to be way better, but only because there were way less of the former and the latter weren’t perceived as an existential threat yet

In my experience, they are way more racist towards indigenous people than Americans I’ve come across, but less (outwardly) racist towards other brown people. Like they still largely believe the same racist BS Americans do, but seem less sure of it, but indigenous people are a constant reminder of white Canadians’ failures at building a good society. The latter being more subconscious. I’ve seen a lot more outwardly racist speech, graffiti, framing etc towards indigenous people than any other group. It’s the only group that, as a white guy, other white people (strangers) will sort of casually talk racist trash with you and expect you to be on the same page. In the states, white people will do that about any non-white group in my experience. But I’m in a rural province. WMMV on the coasts, where I hear the anti-asian racism is more prominent.

Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m’kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn’t the “one true leftism”. Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is “not real” and that if you only thought like them you’d see what your “real” identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

FAQ

I don’t look XYZ and/or sometimes I can pass as white so I don’t know if I can post here. Can I?

  • This place is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This includes those of mixed heritage and those who may be “white” but are of an ethnicity that is a minority in their area (i.e. Kurds, etc) If you’ve experienced oppression due to your identity that is not based on sexual / gender identification, you are welcome here.

  • Moreover, for our American audience, we have people from around the world who are “white” but are oppressed due to being a minority in their country. They are and should be welcomed here.

What can I post?

  • Anything you think is relevant to the mission of this community. Things will evolve over time.
