On a related note, I finally actually watched Little Miss Sunshine the other day and realized what a great scene the girls’ beauty contest and Olive’s routine in particular was. Bunch of girls doing some questionable dance routines, at least one literal pedophile in the audience, probably one on stage MCing, and then Olive does her routine and that one old lady judge somehow decides she’s crossed a line. Good shit folks. 👏
Forgive the awkward phrasing on this one, but in a pretty direct way, capitalism rewards the type of personality that has absolutely no problem with any exploitation, or even enjoys it. Beyond the luck and ability required to be among the richest on the planet, you also have to be willing to be an awful person.
