What sort of spoilers about the next few years does the ruling class have?

In the ruling parties have essentially decided to give up on this year’s elections. What are they trying to avoid being blamed for? Is it more than just a global recession? Wrong answers preferred.

The hyperspace bypass has to go somewhere after all, and it’s not like we haven’t had time to pop over to Alpha Centari to see the plans
