The reason it has no real competition is because it’s really hard to make money off of video hosting. I don’t know about more recently but historically Youtube has just lost money due to the enormous data hosting costs of all the 3 views no subscriber videos that are uploaded every day

I mentioned PeerTube in a different comment, but it’s based on the same ActivityPub protocol underlying Lemmy (Reddit) and Mastodon (Twitter). PeerTube is the same thing but as a YouTube alternative.

One neat thing is that videos are seeded by peers, rather than hosted from one mega server. So the cost and control is distributed among many participants.

It’s cool to think about the implications of easy and decentralized video platforms. Already some official organizations are using ActivityPub for video sharing, like the EU: https://tube.network.europa.eu/
