Nice, thanks a lot, especially the dirty_bytes settings are interesting to me, because I experience hangs with too much disk IO :-P.

Cheers!

Could you ELI5 the last five settings? I saw that Chrome OS sets vm.overcommit_memory = 1, it seems to make sense but is missing here.

Thanks a lot! You are right, I saw this already.

I can confirm the findings with my benchmarks: zstd has the best compression, lz4 is the fastest.

there is no android phone that I am passionate about,

Not what you asked for:

A phone is a tool which should enable you to do stuff. Be passionate about friends, hobbies, art, not a piece of plastic.

Being forced to use iOS (work phone) and Android (Samsung, also work), both suck IMHO but Android sucks less.

My next Android will be a Pixel, as others suggested custom roms are the way to go, but even vanilla Android is more functional/open/practical for my needs than iOS.

I would never buy Apples shit with my own money: Dumped down, locked down and in the end you are renting a device from Apple to pay fees for their Appstore and Cloud offerings and vendor lock in. No thanks.

KMail has filtering rules. IMHO the problem is more about stability and other known issues with KMail.

Vivaldi is a great Blink-engine based browser, my fallback in cases Firefox fails to render a page I really need.

Outstanding are the official flatpaks for amd64 and Aarch64.

(I do not understand why it is impossible for Mozilla to provide an official Aarch64 flatpak.)

How do I enable DNS over HTTPS or DNS over TLS for all connections in NetworkManager in Debian 12?

It is easy to configure custom DNS servers for all connections via a new .conf file in /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d with a servers=8.8.8.8 entry in the [global-dns-domain-*] section.

How can I configure NetworkManager to use DNS over HTTPS or DNS over TLS via a conf file?

Symlinks are fully transparent for all software just opening the file etc.

If the software really cares about this (like file managers) they can simply ask the Linux kernel for additional information, like what type of file it is.

You got some good answers already, here is one more option: Create a *.desktop file to run sudo alsactrl, and copy the *.desktop file ~/.config/autostart (Might need to configure sudo to run alsactrl w/o password.)

IMHO the cleanest option is SystemD.

Nah, didn’t mind the meme!

I totally accept that Eclipse doesn’t work for and life is too short to waste it on tooling.

In that sense, good luck with your current & future setups and happy coding! :-)
