I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe… Piss ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion… I watched Pee-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like piss in rain…

I really enjoyed Monkey Man, Late Night With The Devil, The Blackening, Poor Things and the Whale. That’s just off the top of my head.

I know they aren’t really blockbusters by any stretch, but it’s rare to get a blockbuster that is also a non slop movie. These are all films that showed on my local cinema though, and they were all great. I hate cape shit and avoid most slop, except the odd guilty pleasure. To be honest I thought the Dune adaptation was really good and that was rather popular. So add that to my slop wall.

I have my girlfriend to thank for dragging me out to see these films and it has made me realise that I was being rather snobbish in the past. There’s a lot of good stuff out there if you just go out and watch it. You won’t always be amazed but you’ll be surprised what you do end up liking.

I saw them in Yunnan. It’s very mountainous with searing sun even in march when I went. There are a lot of rice paddies where they grow this beautiful red rice. As with all the ethnicities in this part of China they have very colourful traditional dress. I might be getting confused with the Hani people but I think the Yi women wear these semi circular crest hats. I think it’s either the Yi or Hani or both that are a matriarchal society, which is really cool. And they have these large families where all the kids are brought up in the matriarchs household regardless of who the father is. They have this elaborate ritual where the guys sneak over at night to court the women.

Their food is amazing, with a good amount of vegetables when compared to the rest of China. They prefer garlic over chilli, so not very spicy but packed full of flavour. They drink a lot of tea which is great. Tea with meals is not hugely popular where I am at the moment (Guangxi) and I miss knocking back glass after glass of puerr tea.

There’s one clip with gay Michael Douglas at the bottom of the sea and I wish I could find that. It destroys me every time.

I’m at the bottom of the sea, having sex with crabs.
